After you have your teeth professionally whitened, here’s how you can extend those beautiful results for as long as possible.

Avoid teeth-staining foods and drinks

Much of the tooth stains that people experience are caused by the foods we eat and the drinks we consume. Many of these foods have natural staining pigments. Big tooth-staining culprits include red wine, coffee and dark berries. Spices like turmeric can also stain your teeth.

Foods such as citrus fruits and juices as well as soft drinks have a high acid content. Consuming them can temporarily soften your tooth enamel. As a result, stains can more easily penetrate your teeth. You don’t, however, have to refrain from consuming citrus fruits and juices. Just be sure to rinse your mouth afterwards.

Don’t use tobacco products

It’s no surprise that tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco, all cause yellow and brown stains on teeth. Vaping fluids that contain colourings can also stain teeth. The nicotine in these products can decrease the production of saliva, making it more challenging for your saliva to wash away other staining pigments. Of course, it’s a good idea to avoid tobacco products as they are harmful to your health.

Rinse after eating and drinking

Consider carrying a water bottle with you so you can quickly swish to rid your mouth of staining pigments. You also can chew sugar-free gum, which can help to remove staining pigments from your tooth surfaces. It also can increase the production of saliva to help wash away staining pigments.

Practice good oral hygiene

In addition to rinsing your mouth after meals, brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft brush and a whitening toothpaste. Floss correctly, as well, curving the floss against the tooth surface to remove plaque. You can also use a whitening rinse but opt for an alcohol-free one, so it doesn’t cause your mouth to become dry.

Keep those cleaning appointments

Just as professional cleanings are essential before whitening, they’re also essential after treatment to maintain your results. Before you whiten, get a checkup, clean and polish for only $150. During your cleaning, your hygienist will remove tartar and plaque that can leave your teeth looking dull and dingy.
